Exacting Revenge 150 Years Later?

In response to inquires as to my absence from this page for the last five days, thank you for the concern. I now have some time to explain.

Friday night, during a diner party in honor of a dear friend, a stately and graceful spanish moss covered 200 year old oak tree gave up the ghost.  Hilarity ensued, but that is a story for another time.  The result is a large section of Diogenes' humble abode, lovingly restored over the past 85 years by the three previous owners and myself, is heavily damaged. The tree fell dead center into the room used as Diogenes' Headquarters. Fortunately, it missed most, but not all of my computer equipment.

But this tree was not just any tree.

Early in April, 1864 just before the battle of Mansfield, fought just south of where I sit, two union soldiers were sent behind the confederate lines to scout out the heavily fortified gun emplacements guarding Confederate Naval Yard, the Red River and the city of Shreveport. The Union soldiers were captured by a confederate patrol and the the next day were hung as spies, and left as a message for anyone who followed. It is said but not been proven, that three runaway slaves hiding in the woods cut them down and buried them under the tree where they were hung. The very tree that damaged my home.

Over the years, in attempts to verify the story, request to dig around the tree have been denied by all the previous owner because of the shallow roots of an oak, and the danger to the tree. But now that the tree is to be cut up and the ground is disturbed, local historians have asked once again to verify the legend. I plan to grant permission if assurances are given of a proper military burial if any remains are found.

One friend joked "maybe the soldiers just finally got their revenge". For you see the property was bought soon after the war by a former confederate Major who built the original residence that stood on this site until 1905, until it burnt.

As for me, I was devastated about the damage, that was until a friend hugged me and said "but for the grace of God  go I - you could be in the Philippines". Yes, It is good to be an American.

Half of all Medicaid recipients in Illinois found not eligible.....

"You know what we need? A massive expansion of the supremely wasteful and fraud-fraught boondoggle that is Medicaid. Oh, wait. Obamacare’s already giving us that." - Poor Richard's News
KMOV -- The early findings of an ongoing review of the Illinois Medicaid program revealed that half the people enrolled weren’t even eligible.
The state insisted it’s not that bad but Medicaid is on the federal government’s own list of programs at high risk of waste and abuse.
Now, a review of the Illinois Medicaid program confirms massive waste and fraud.
A review was ordered more than a year ago-- because of concerns about waste and abuse. So far, the state says reviewers have examined roughly 712-thousand people enrolled in Medicaid, and found that 357-thousand, or about half of them shouldn't have received benefits. After further review, the state decided that the percentage of people who didn't qualify was actually about one out of four.
"It says that we've had a system that is dysfunctional. Once people got on the rolls, there wasn't the will or the means to get them off...."
“Illinois one of the most miss-managed states in country-- lists of reasons-- findings shouldn't surprise anyone....

Just go into any local office that administers free benefits from Federal or State coffers and look at who most of  the employees are. This story should come as no surprise.

Chalk One More Up in the Democrat Sleezeball Column

Sleezeball- Elect McAuliffe

Terry McAuliffe represents an unseemly side of Washington. His primary role in politics for the past two decades or more has been to spew the party line in the media, and raising lots of cash. Most notably, for the Clintons. He cooked up the idea of essentially renting out the Lincoln bedroom during the Clinton administration as a fundraising vehicle, and he smashed all previous presidential fundraising records in the process.

When McAuliffe was the Dems' top fundraiser, a campaign finance scandal besieged the Clinton White House. Coincidence? No. McAuliffe was all about pushing the envelope when it came to the political money chase. That alone is not be enough to render him a distasteful political candidate in his party. Quiet the contrary.

What's different about McAuliffe is his brazen mixing of his campaign fundraising activity and attempts to enrich himself personally. Many of McAuliffe's business deals have come about due to his place in the political cosmos, not because he possesses a wealth of business skill. That tangled history has linked him to a long list of slimy unsavory characters.
