Last night I had dinner with an old friend, a Regional Vice President of a large Book Chain. A life long liberal who admits to being embarrassed these day to say so, she told me something quite interesting that she found upsetting, personally and professionally.
We have all heard of Ben Carson, one of the most celebrated neurosurgeons in the world. His book 'Gifted Hands' is the story of an innercity kid, with all the breaks seemingly against him, who through faith and hard work became director of pediatric neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins Hospital at age 33.
Gifted Hands, has been an inspirations to a generation that chose to listen to what he had to say, and undoubtedly influence many along the way. It has been a staple of high school reading list for many years, especially predominately black schools. But no more.
Large classroom institutional orders bought through book stores by school system administrators for his book are dropping dramatically. Once a book that remained in the top 100 of Amazon's book sales (consistently between #50 and 60) now has fallen to #261 and dropping. Why you ask? A black kid from Detroit makes good in the world and his story is no longer relevant?
Ben Carson has been critical of not just the Health-care reform in it's present form, but also Barack Obama and his lack of leadership and direction he takes America. And to boot, he was never the Affirmative Action Plantation Negro many made him out to be. He is now no longer the hero, just another so-called Uncle Tom tool of the right with a PC bulls-eye on his back. Some speak of him as a possible VP candidate.
What is sad is the obvious prejudice of left-wing educators pointed at the very man, a black man, who's accomplishments are stellar in a world of poverty and hopelessness some who read his book come from.
This is the world of the leftist, and what they have created.
Thanks for the view into that conversation, Jan. This one rings pretty true. I've found that the liberals I know in positions of quasi-power really are really quite ashamed of some of the contra-moral things they do, like spiking stories or suppressing people. Or lying. They are conflicted, but they see this as war, which trumps morals for them. The tragedy is that if they were willing to be on the right side, they could have war and still be moral about it and actually sleep at night. But noooooooooo. Idiots.
ReplyDeleteThe devastation of their war on our culture is starting to show on their faces....
Delete...but what they think the war IS, and what they think they're fighting FOR are not real. Meaning, for example, that they aren't fighting against racism because conservatives don't care about race. But, they think they're fighting it, ever since they made up the notion that conservatives are racist. They essentially built a monster, pasted it on the right, and they think they're fighting the monster.
DeleteI totally disagree! I have worked for a major left-wing newspaper for over 20 years and I can assure you "progressives" are NOT conflicted or ashamed about anything they or their fellow progressives do or have done. No matter how compassionate they claim to be, the progressives I've known are without a conscience and refuse to accept responsibilities for their failed socialist policies. They blamed 911 on Republican policies. They blame our national debt and economic problems on Republican policies. They are already using their tortured logic to explain how Republicans are to blame for Benghazi and the VA scandal. If a few stray progressives are so unwise to criticize Obama, they will be dealt with swiftly and harshly to keep the others inline.
DeleteYou have to think like a criminal to catch a criminal!
The teachers' union at work. Young impressionable minds are not to be told of the success of a conservative black. They need to learn about King and King, and how President Lincoln was a democrat that freed the slaves, and how socialism and big gov't are good for you.
