Like the old guy wearing a jersey three sizes to small who once long ago kicked a winning field goal, Democrats seem to have coalesced around Biden for his past rather than for anything in his present. "Have another Juice Box Joe, and get us to the convention."
It’s as if Biden exists primarily as an idea, rather than an actual candidate. Democrats have chosen Biden as their leaky battleship for Trump’s defeat, and that choice is the entire point: The vanquishing matters more than anything else. Biden was never really convincing anyone on the stump. His political power at this point is an idea, held collectively, about how to defeat DJT. But even in his prime, Biden was an unimpressive candidate who's mouth regularly outran it's supply line, and who very few voters took seriously. He's now just a place holder. But for who?
